# A Hokkaido Backcountry Equipment Checklist That Starts with Systems

## Begin with companion rescue

Japan Avalanche Network states that every member should carry an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel. Those tools have separate roles: locating a signal, pinpointing a burial and moving snow. They belong with each person, not distributed as a single group set. JAN also stresses that the equipment does not guarantee survival and is not effective without regular practice.

Check transceiver function as a group at the start of the day and follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for carrying, interference and batteries. A checklist can remind you to perform the check; it cannot certify that you know companion rescue. Practise searching, probing and strategic shovelling in realistic clothing and under time pressure with qualified instruction.

An avalanche airbag may be an additional tool, but it does not replace the transceiver, probe, shovel or terrain choices. Avoid using equipment as a reason to accept more exposure. The primary safety system remains avoiding involvement through informed decisions and appropriate terrain.

## Travel equipment must match the plan

Skis, splitboard, snowshoes, skins, poles and traction tools are not interchangeable across every objective. Match the travel system to the expected surface, transitions, slope and escape options. Carry the parts required to keep that system working, and know which failure would end the trip immediately.

Do not copy a generic crampon or rope recommendation into every Hokkaido tour. Technical equipment is only useful where the terrain and user competence justify it; carrying unfamiliar hardware can create false confidence. If the plan requires mountaineering tools or protected movement, select a guide with an appropriate scope of qualification and obtain instruction rather than relying on a packing list.

At home, complete every transition with gloves: climbing to descending, board assembly, binding adjustment and traction attachment. In the field, stop before an exposed transition point and keep loose items controlled. Small inefficiencies become cold stress when wind and time accumulate.

## Navigation and communication need backups

Carry an offline map and a device you can operate in gloves, but plan for the device to fail. Cold drains batteries, wet touchscreens misbehave and a phone may also be the camera, weather source and emergency contact. Independent power and a second navigation method reduce the number of roles assigned to one fragile object.

A satellite communicator or personal locator device can improve communication where mobile coverage is absent, but coverage, subscriptions and emergency workflows vary. Register and test the device according to its official instructions. Know what an SOS does, what information is transmitted and how the party will continue caring for the patient while help is requested.

Leave a trip plan with a responsible person outside the group. Include the intended area, broad route, party, vehicle or transport information, expected return and escalation instructions. Update that contact when the plan changes. A message sent from the trailhead is part of the equipment system even though it weighs nothing.

## Cold, injury and delay are group problems

Pack clothing as a system for movement, stops and an unplanned delay. Avoid cotton next to the skin; carry insulation and weather protection that remain available after the normal layers are in use. Spare gloves can restore function after a wet transition. Eye protection and sun protection matter in both storm light and clear spring conditions.

A first-aid kit should reflect the party’s training and likely time to assistance. Add emergency shelter, fire-starting means where appropriate, repair materials, light, food and water capacity. The goal is not to create a universal item count. It is to identify the failures the group can reasonably stabilise while retreating or waiting for help.

Distribute essential group items deliberately and record who carries them. One overloaded expert is not redundancy. If that person becomes the patient, the group still needs navigation, shelter, communication and repair capacity. Before leaving, ask each person to name what they carry and where it is packed.

## Use the checklist as a conversation

A checklist works best when it exposes assumptions. Why is this item needed? Who can use it? What is the backup? What changes if the weather worsens or the return takes longer? Answering those questions together reveals gaps that a row of ticked boxes can conceal.

Review current official avalanche, weather, access and volcanic information separately. Equipment cannot compensate for a closed road, an active restriction, inadequate visibility or terrain beyond the group’s skill. Finally, perform a trailhead check: rescue tools present and functional, route downloaded, devices powered, clothing accessible, plan shared, current information reviewed and turnaround conditions understood.
